I was shopping recently with a friend, hunting for a mutual friend's leaving gift. He is off to study in Missouri, at the University of Missouri at Columbia. Initially we thought we might buy him a guidebook to the region. Unfortunately none of the Cambridge bookshops we tried were able to produce more than one text. This was a paperback guide to the Plains states, covering 5 others as well as Missouri. Columbia itself got both a paragraph and a photo, describing and displaying the 6 Ionic columns to be found in the famous University Quadrangle. In the end we didn't buy the book, as we felt it might be a little depressing to realise how little there seems to be around there. I just hope the cows are fascinating enough to keep our friend busy for 5 years...
