Laura James's Wifflings

This is just a place for things that I think it might be useful to write down and put somewhere.

Had lots of fun over the last two days being very busy in a hangar at Duxford. On Tuesday I helped small small children to build lightweight boats from paper tubes, nuts&bolts, and polythene; then we stuck them in a tank of water, added weights until the boats gave in (usually around 7kg!) and fished them out again, getting me splendidly wet in the process. Yesterday we had slightly older kids, and I was doing robot football. Ping-pong balls went everywhere, and it was quite an adventure fishing them out from under the aircraft parts at the side of the hangar. Rex Garrod, ex-stunt guy and creator of RobotWars, showed me how to make a variable-frequency whistle from fresh horse chestnut twigs - a very useful skill :-) Recently he's been producing the "Real Robots" magazine series with Prof Kevin Reading from Warwick Uni. On both days Dominator 2 (huge shiny metal creation from RobotWars) showed us how to smash up a filing cabinet during lunch. I didn't envy the poor guy who had to flip it to demonstrate the self-righting mechanism...
